OPPRESSION: LET ME BREATHE

This artwork embodies the melancholic history of my people and all Aboriginal peoples, tracing the scars left by colonisation. As a Yorta Yorta person from South-eastern Australia, I grapple with the disquieting reality of our displacement and disconnection from ancestral lands. The fragments of our language, like whispers in the wind, remain elusive as we strive to reclaim our cultural essence. Since my first breath, I’ve felt the inexorable pull to recover what was once ours, an eternal struggle against the tide of oppression. It’s as if we are caught in a perpetual twilight, shadows of knees pressing upon our necks, yearning for liberation and the return of our stolen breaths. This work reflects my restless spirit, and a beacon of my unyielding fight to restore my heritage and breathe freely once more.
