Wanala (Summer)

Artist: Chloe Jones
Size: 90cm x 90cm
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Story: Wanala translates to ‘summer’ in my tribal language, Yorta Yorta. The warm tones and gestural application of colour in this painting reflect the season and landscape at this time of year. The hot sand on the banks of the rivers is also portrayed through hub-like compositions made of purple, mustard, and ochre. This reflects the different grains of sand across all of the river banks in the Dungala and Kaiela region. As with most of my work, memories of my childhood such as camping along the river banks formed the inspiration for this painting.
