First Steps
Mya Falla
This painting represents the simple innocence of a child’s first steps. The phrase “baby steps” refers to making very small, gradual and cautious progress towards a larger goal. Simmilarly, as adults, who have been walking for many years, we also want to make sure to slow down and be cautious rather than jumping in the deep end all the time and overworking ourselves to reach the difficult high standards that we have set. I have chosen to use pastel colours for this piece because for me it reminds me to take things slow and steady and remain calm and even when things in my life seem to leap and not step.

Dulgubarra Yidinji
Gifted the name Muguy, meaning constant in her traditional language, Mya is always seeking to further her cultural knowledge.
Mya was born and raised in Greater Shepparton and holds a deep respect for the Country of the Yorta Yorta and Bangerang peoples as it carries many of her childhood memories.
As a Dulguburra Yidinji woman, she has a strong connection to her mother’s Country, the rainforest in and around the crater lakes of the tablelands, inland of Gimuy (Cairns).
A contemporary artist across various mediums, Mya enjoys experimenting with textures and colours in reflecting her experiences and the stories her mother tells her of ‘home.’
