Our Men, More than 50 Years of Deadly!
This year we decided to close our doors to the public during NAIDOC Week, so our team and artists could take time to participate in celebrations here on Yorta Yorta Country and beyond.
For five decades, NAIDOC Week has celebrated the voices of our communities, steady, unapologetic and proud, and this year’s theme Fifty Years of Deadly was a marker, not just of time passed, but of the momentum still building. It’s proof of what our people build when culture leads and community comes first. NAIDOC belongs to mob and it always has.
More Than 50 Years – Foundry Art Space Exhibition
We kicked off our NAIDOC celebrations at the Foundry Art Space’s annual NAIDOC exhibition, More Than 50 Years of Deadly. Now in its 15th year, the exhibition is organised by Yorta Yorta Elders Vicki Walker and Denise Morgan-Bulled, whose tireless work keeps culture strong and visible in Echuca.
This year’s all-male exhibition featured three of our artists, Brett Wilson, Jack Anselmi and Paul Hamlyn, alongside other local First Nations artist Stuart Hearn, Kevin Williams, Chucky Firebrace, Baymos Handy, Sam Bux and students from St Joseph’s College.
Some of our team attended the launch on June 19, joining community and families from Echuca and Moama to celebrate our men artists. Narjic Day-Burns shared his music, and Uncle Des Morgan told stories of the local heroes honoured on a wall dedicated to these men.
